From the beginning, Tommy, Joe and Gus Longo focused on hand-selected fruits and vegetables that traveled from farm to table as quickly as possible. Relationships with local farmers that could provide the freshest, highest quality produce were formed with a simple handshake. Even then, home delivery orders represented nearly 40% of their business. Customers would phone in their order, a family member would hand-select the products, carefully pack them and deliver in a rumbling old truck.
Today, Longo’s remains a family-owned-and-operated business delivering their original vision of exceeding customer expectations by offering the best food experience how customers want it: whether at a traditional Longo’s store, The Market by Longo’s, or on Grocery Gateway. Now more than 30 stores in the Greater Toronto Area, a cornerstone of their growth and success has been innovation. In the 1990s, responding to the needs of increasingly time-starved families, Longo’s launched Freshness-to-Go, offering phone or fax grocery orders with quick in-store pickup. Well-received by customers, this program was soon replaced by the Longo’s next step in dedicated customer service, Grocery Gateway.
